Can you use normal skin lotion (moisturizer) in a tanning bed?

I have lotion meant for use in a tanning bed but it smells too strong and I can’t find unscented. But someone told me if I don’t use lotion in the tanning bed I will burn. Is that true? (I’m very fair skinned) can I use normal body lotion (from like bath & body works or something) instead of the stuff formulated for the tanning bed & avoid burning?

I am sorry to tell you this, but you will burn either way. When you tan, you are burning your skin. There is no such thing as a base tan–your skin only burns slower. If you are very fair skinned, please PLEASE stay away from tanning booths!!! That dramatically increases your chance of cancer, wrinkles, and advanced aging of your skin. I know that looking tan makes you look "hotter", but look at people in their 30′s, even in their 20′s that tanned a lot…they will show you their sun damaged skin that doesn’t look so hott.

  1. I use regular moisturizer made with hemp when I tan because specialty lotions just made me orange and streaky. I find that I tan just as well as people that use tanning lotions. Tanning lotions don’t prevent you from burning as they don’t contain SPF, they just accelerate the tanning process. The first few times that I tan I always use a low SPF outdoor tanning lotion on the areas that are prone to burn until they get used the UV light.
